Betsky to curate Venice exhibition

BY SARA PEARCE | SPEARCE@ENQUIRER.COM

Cincinnati Art Museum director Aaron Betsky was named today to one of the most influential and high-profile positions in the world of architecture: he will curate Venice's 11th International Architecture Exhibition – better known as the Venice Architecture Biennale.

It will be held in the fall – Sept. 14-Nov. 23 – and its theme is 「Out There: Architecture Beyond Building.」

It reflects Betsky's vision that buildings are not enough to make people feel at home these days. So think landscape design, interior design, art, projected media and more.

There will be 「site-specific installations, manifestos, landscapes and scenes of an architecture beyond building.」 Also on exhibit: experimental architecture from around the world.

Just like the curator of the Venice Biennale of Art – the two exhibits are held in alternate years – this catapults Betsky into the international spotlight and puts him in a position to make more than a few careers.

Of course, it also means he will be a target for the world's critics, who love to second-guess the biennales. And it means that Cincinnati will be mentioned in the myriad stories that will be written about the biennale and Betsky.

Betsky was director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute for a little more than five years before being hired in August 2006 as CAM's director. He's a prolific author and has written on architecture in books and for major art and architecture publications.

He curated the Dutch pavilion at the biennale in 2002, 2004 and 2006 – and won the Golden Lion for best foreign pavilion at the 2002 biennale.
